Landing in New York City was a strange feeling. New York was home to our family just 6 short months ago so I wasn’t sure how I would feel going back. I walked right to our secret cap line at LGA, still no wait. (Yay, I still feel like I am not a tourist!) But, when I didn’t give the cab driver our old address and I had to direct him to my hotel in the Upper West Side, I felt a bit of nostalgia for TriBeCa, our old neighborhood. As we drove closer to the city and I saw a glimpse of the skyline, the old excitement and energy rushed over me. I get it every time I see the skyline. It is true, those lights will inspire you.

My flight was slightly delayed and my schedule was already tight. Between the flight delay and traffic, I had already missed my first show, Kate Spade, before I even reached the hotel. By the time I got checked in and change, I had now missed another presentation. There wasn’t anything I could do except get changed and pick up at the next scheduled stop. So, I headed to Lincoln Center. And on the four block walk from my hotel, it hit me…

It was freezing. I was freezing. Knox would not be happy in New York this winter. He could not play outside the way he can in Houston. We would have to bundle up in so many layers. The parks off the water in TriBeCa are always the coldest! I am so glad we are in Houston now. There, I said it. It’s official. For so many reasons. I love you New York, but you are not home anymore.

After a long weekend in the city, I returned home last night so grateful to be close to our families, living in a house with a backyard, in a wonderful neighborhood, with a car, and a warmer climate.  Houston is now our home, and I couldn’t be happier.

Until next time, NYC.
xo, CHK

It was a beautiful weekend in Houston with the temperatures getting up in the 70’s! We spent our afternoons playing at the park and brunching outside. Now, if only it will stick around. 🙂

We all love casual stripes for summer, but I love how these red sneakers and stripe sweater stylishly bring one of my favorite casual looks into the cooler months.

As an avid traveler, I am thrilled to be kicking off an exciting partnership with Alamo!  FMK and I were frequent flyers before having Knox and we want to continue experiencing new places while also teaching Knox about different cultures now that we are parents.  As an Alamo Chief Travel Mom (CTM), it is my goal to relive some of the anxiety that comes with traveling with children, as well as, make sure your family has fun along the way!  We are tackling hot travel topics by breaking them down into a few categories for you, and I will expanding on each through the partnership in the upcoming year – Navigating Mom Problems, Moms for Moms & The Laughing Mom.  Get excited because this one is going to be fun and you just might be in for a prize along the way!

First up – how to avoid basic travel this holiday season.  The holidays are the heaviest traveled days of the entire year so it is the perfect time to start this conversation.  With Alamo, we want to make sure you don’t fall into the basic travel rut by sharing these 5 tips on how you can go above and beyond to make the upcoming holiday season (and rest of the year) meaningful.  And I don’t just mean by spending more money, but by making it unique and special for the entire family.

5 not so basic travel ideas:

1. This one sounds like the easiest, but it is probably the most common mistake we make as parents when it comes to travel.  You’ve all heard the age-old saying, “Attitude is everything.” and when it comes to travel it couldn’t be more true!  Don’t be the anxious, stressed out Mom that sets a negative mood for the vacation before you even leave the house.  Some of my favorite childhood memories took place in route to vacations so try not to think of the vacation starting when you arrive at your destination, but rather when you leave your house.

2. Let your children in on the planning (if they are old enough).  Do some research on a variety of things to do in the area (educational, active, outdoors, indoors, etc.) and present several options to your family.  If you have more than one child, let each child pick an activity or place to eat.  This way no matter what they pick it is a win since you pre selected the options, but the whole family feels involved and gets excited about whats to come!  Bonus: They can’t complain if they picked it!

3. For older children, provide a notebook and writing utensil for them to journal your trip.  They can write about what animals they spied out the window, places they ate, people they saw, things they learned, etc.  It is also great to have to play hangman or tic-tac-toe if you find yourself with some down time.

4. Give each child an inexpensive throw away camera.  Let them take pictures to document the trip through their own eyes.  Hey, you might even be surprised when the pictures get developed!

5. Start a family travel tradition that you can continue on every family vacation.  I like the idea of getting a picture at a famous landmark (what the destination is most known for) and starting a photo travel map back home.  Put your picture on the map and watch your map fill up over the years.  This creates a visual memory board of all your vacations, and it also teaches your children geographically where they have been.  Your kids will have fun picking where they want their picture taken on each trip.   It is great to have a visual goal of where you want to go next when you see an empty region on the map just begging you to come explore it!

To share your creative tips and to join the discussions for more fun ideas, be sure to tune into our twitter chat on 12/03 at 8:00pm EST.  It willl ensure sure your holiday travel is anything but basic.  You can continue to follow along with all the CTM’s with #AlamoDriveHappy.  By joining the conversation, you will be eligible to win the Alamo Family Travel Prize Pack ($400 value: $250 AMEX Gift Card, Alamo Striped Tote Bag, Alamo Sunglasses 5-pack, Alamo Mini LED Key Light, Anker External Battery ChargerSelfie BoomstickJoby Gorillatorch Flexible Tripod Flashlight)

My travel buddies from L-R: Amy, Mackenzie, Jamie, me, Chastity, Grace, Mary, Amy & Carly

If you follow me on Instagram, you saw my feed flooded with Charleston pictures last weekend and you got a glimpse into the amazing weekend the CBV and Chassity hosted for myself + 7 of my favorite blogger friends. To say the weekend was anything short of amazing would be an understatement. I already knew all the girls going into the trip since it randomly ended up being a group of mostly NYC and Texas girls (funny that when we started planning the trip I was in the former, but by the time the trip rolled around I fell back into the later category). If you aren’t already following these girls, you should -> Amy, Carly, Grace, and Mackenzie (the New Yorkers) + Amy and Mary (from Texas) and I can’t forget Jamie (from North Carolina) and our host, of course, Chassity (from Charleston).

10729347_768838583183042_1196735986_n 10693572_1488957338038844_306061467_n

Mary and I were the first to arrive on Saturday morning so after settling in to our rooms at the historic Mills House Hotel, we grabbed a quick sandwich at the Bull Street Gourmet Market and didn’t waste anymore time before hitting up the shopping on King Street!

10725016_638259302949848_1119345657_n

Everyone else trickled in Friday afternoon and we all met for a fun little kick off at the hotel bar before hopping on the rickshaws and starting our progressive dinner!  I have never actually thought to do a progressive dinner when traveling, but it is pretty genius when you think about it.  There is never enough time to taste all the amazing restaurants in a culinary city like Charleston when you are only there for a weekend trip so why not eat your heart out one night?  This might be my new thing!  (If I can be as organized as Molly!)

  Carbs for Later 10732040_355441651282415_1416311614_n

First stop was The Daily which isn’t normally opened for dinner, but they welcomed us with wine and appetizer and sent us home with amazing pastries for the next morning (how cute were the ‘carbs for later’ bags?!)  Be sure to check them out for coffee next time you are in town and explore the Upper King Street area.  It is a newer, evolving side of town that you don’t want to miss!  Next stop was The Grocery.  The service and atmosphere were just as amazing as the southern food – my favorite was the fried okra!  By now I was feeling pretty full, but I had been to the last stop, Macintosh, before so I knew to save room because it is just too good to pass up.  Well, I didn’t pass on anything and every bite was worth it.  I honestly don’t even have a favorite here, but the burrata, the deckle (what they are known for) and the scallops were all perfection!  I should also mention we had two girls with dietary restrictions (gluten-free + vegetarian) traveling with us and every restaurant had amazing options for alternatives to the standard menu.  By now we were all pretty full and tired from the day’s travels (or maybe it was just a food coma) so we decided to rest up for our full day ahead and turn in to the hotel.  I slept like a baby because I knew my baby wouldn’t be waking me up (and he was in good hands at home with his DaDa).

We kicked off Saturday morning with a 2 hour walking tour with Bulldog Tours.  I can’t recommend this enough.  A walking tour really is the only way to explore Charleston, in my opinion.  There is so much detail to be seen strolling the cobblestone streets, peeking into some of the oldest churches in the US and lusting over all the beautiful homes, gardens and piazzas (porches).

Chastity hosted us at her amazing home for lunch.  It was seriously out of a magazine!  The table setting and invitations looked more like a wedding than a brunch and we all just walked around and stared in amazement.  I am pretty sure Chassity may have us showing up at her door a few times a year because we couldn’t get enough!

Hampdon Clothing Charleston, SC

After all that, we had some free time to explore on our own so I v-lined to Hampden Clothing (I told you about here).  I played dress up in the fitting room and finally decided on one treasure!  Then Stacy walked us down to Crogan’s Jewel Box.  Crogan’s is a King Street staple that has been there for over 100 years and is now being run by the second and third generation.  They have an incredible vintage jewelry selection curated from pieces hand selected from around the world and they also have adorable gifts and their very own jewelry line, The Goldbug Collection, designed by granddaughter Mariana.

Speaking of the Crogan’s, they were actually our host for dinner Saturday night at their beautiful home in the historic district.  We walked through their beautiful garden to a band playing on the piazza and Brooks Reitz (famed mixologist, restaurateur and founder of Jack Rudy Small Batch Tonic) mixing drinks at the bar.  I ordered the Bee’s Knees and I knew it was going to be a good night!  Cru, another can’t miss restaurant, catered dinner and it was delicious!  We ended the evening with cocktails at the rooftop bar at the Market Pavilion Hotel.

graybenko_explorecharleston-81

graybenko_explorecharleston-77

As if all this wasn’t enough, the CVB sent us off in style Sunday morning with one last hooray – a beautiful brunch on the roof of the Mills House Hotel.  Many of the talented local designers were in attendance and I loved getting to meet so many inspiring women and see how they all pull together and support each other.  If you haven’t heard of these gals already, expect to soon! Lindsey Carter is the talented clothing designer behind Troubadour Clothing, Lauren Lail curates a beautiful vintage collection at Library Fashion, Deirdre Zahl’s brought back Charleston Rice Beads and also sells vintage jewelry at Candy Shop Vintage, and I was so excited to finally meet, Jane Pope Jewelry (who made my all time favorite #FrederickKnox necklace!)

A huge thank you to Molly of the Chareleston CVB for an incredible trip.  You truly know how to create an incredible experience in your amazingly charming city!  Thank you, thank you!

Sounds like another reason to get excited for fall to me!

FMK and I are headed to Charleston this afternoon for a couples trip with some friends, and this will be my comfortable travel outfit.  It is our first trip together without Knox so I am having some mixed emotions.  I am so excited to get away with FMK and I know Knox is in good hands, but I am sure going to miss his sweet kisses and playful spirit.

Although Labor Day isn’t the official end to summer, heading into September always feels like the beginning of a new season. Perhaps this is me still holding on to a school girl mindset from the days when September meant back to school. Regardless of the reason, I decided to round-up a few of my favorite outfits from this summer before we head into fall. (But, let’s be honest. I live in Houston now so here’s to hoping for an actual fall.)  From this little recap, it looks like shorts, layered blazers, and easy dresses were my summer staples!

Moving from a NYC apartment to a Texas home means I have a lot of decorating to do! Of course, we will not be able to do it all at once, but I am having so much fun just thinking about how I want to fill the rooms. I have always loved antique furniture (it must be the southern girl in me), but I love adding youthful fabrics and modern lines to keep the overall feel younger and perhaps a little unexpected.
DSC_0101

I came to my hometown of Corsicana this week to visit family and to do a little shopping at my favorite antique store, Canterbury Court. I made sure to pack my new favorite denim + t-shirt combo from Old Navy for a comfy outfit for travel and shopping. I love the front double zippers on the jeans and, of course, you can never have too many striped t-shirts!
DSC_0034

I picked up this cute ‘office’ sign to hang in my future office. This is the one room I don’t have a clear vision of what I want the room to look like, but I just couldn’t leave this treasure behind.

I think these chairs should come home with me!

Knox and I took a little road trip to visit family this week while FMK stayed in Houston for work. We left the lake house on Sunday, made a stop at my parents house for a night and then continued on to my grandparents (Knox’s great grandparent’s) house on Monday. I feel so incredibly blessed to still have three healthy grandparents for Knox to know. They are the purest examples of faith and love, and I pray that we both grow-up to be (even a little) more like them.

Our poor little angel got his first stomach bug this week. He has been so sweet and happy despite not feeling well, but he couldn’t hold anything down yesterday other than Pedialyte and crackers. It broke my heart to see him sick. He seemed much better this morning so fingers crossed it was just a 24-hour bug.

With all our travel and the Texas heat, this has been my uniform lately. A favorite button down or t-shirt and my go-to denim shorts. I am really starting to crave fall fashion. (And a proper closet with all my clothes unpacked!)

We made it to Houston!

And it feels really good to be back in Texas. We have been so busy checking off our to do list of all the things we need in Texas that we didn’t need in New York.  You know, like cars and a house. (!)  The car part was much easier since our cousins have a dealership in town, but the house part is proving to be a bit more challenging in this market. If you aren’t familiar with what is going on in Houston now… It. Is. Crazy. The economy is booming, and more people are moving here than any other county in the country. More people means more people bidding on the houses we want.  I’ll keep you posted on that front, but in the meantime, wish us luck.  (We need it!)

OLDNAVY_5
One of the things I am most excited about now that we are back in Texas is reconnecting with all our dear friends from growing up and college.  While we were in New York, a lot changed.  We had Knox and our friend’s families grew, as well.  I can’t wait to head to the neighborhood pool with the kids for playdates.  (Because it is just too hot to play in the yard on most summer days.)

OLDNAVY_3
When it comes to easy, fun summer pool clothes you simply can’t beat Old Navy.  Before we left the city, I picked up a bright new swim suit, this denim skirt & light weight stripe shirt / cover-up.  I know I will be living in easy, cool throw on clothes this summer at the lake and pool, but I still want to look cute.  I love how this effortlessly transitions from cover-up to running around town.

OLDNAVY_4
I popped over to a street vendor’s stand and bought this hat before shooting the look and I must say, I have worn it ever since! I lost my J.Crew one last summer, but this little $15 dollar one seems to be working just fine, so far.

OLDNAVY_2
It’s hard to see my swim suit (sorry, I just can’t bring myself to do a swim suit post.) 😉 But, you must check it out! The bright colors and patterns remind me of the Mara Hoffman ones I love!

The last stop on our apartment tour is Knox’s nursery.  His nursery theme is ‘vintage aeronautical’ because we think it’s cute, but also because my father is a commercial airline pilot and my grandfather flew in World War II. The airplanes on the wall above Knox’s glider were in my father and brother’s nurseries.

I don’t want to have to redesign the room in a few years when Knox gets older so I stuck with primary colors and patterns that weren’t too young for an easy transition to a toddler and little boy’s room.

boys airplane nursery 7

The classic ticking stripe crib bedding plays well with the other patterns in the room and the dark navy doesn’t show spots (which I learned quickly is a good thing).  My sister found the custom fly pillow for me from A Grace Unlimited.

wire storage baskets

I loved these baskets from Restoration Hardware, but I couldn’t bring myself to pay that much for storage baskets!  So, I found these on One King’s Lane and I bought some paint & stencils on amazon.  I plan to DIY “toys”, “books” and “laundry” to these baskets for the same look as the RH ones I love!

boys airplane nursery 5
I almost didn’t get a glider because I didn’t think there was room in the nursery, but I am so glad I did! Honestly, this is where you spend most of your time so make sure to pick out a comfortable one! And, be sure to order well in advance. This glider took 6 weeks to get here and Knox arrived 6 weeks early so I was nursing on the couch in the beginning and it wasn’t as convenient or comfortable for late night feedings.

boys airplane nursery 4
I opted for a leather pouf instead of the matching ottoman. The dark leather adds contrast to the light linen fabric and it’s a more functional size for our tiny space. Now that Knox is bigger, it also makes for a fun little play seat for him to pull up on and to sit on.

baby boy airplane nursery
This custom pillow is such a cute baby gift!  I love having all his stats displayed to always remember.

globe baby nursery

Our friends found so many adorable airplane accessories for our showers. I am amazed by how much cute stuff is out there for our nursery theme.

boys airplane nursery 3
The twin bed in the nursery allows the room to double as a guest bedroom.  There is a trundle-bed under it, as well, so we can sleep two guest comfortably.
boys airplane nursery 2

We had to take down the bottom row of pictures for now because Knox was too interested in them during diaper changes.  My sweet college friends ordered the captain sign for our baby shower and I loved it so much I tied it to this floor lamp.  Our apartment doesn’t have any overhead lights so I have to put lamps wherever they will fit!

This weekend officially kicks of summer and, for those who still abide by the old rule, white pants season. We are heading to the beach on Saturday, and I plan on packing these crop linen pants from Old Navy. Paired with a long sleeve linen shirt, it’s the perfect alternative to a sundress in the early summer days before the weather gets too hot.

HOUSE OF HARPER PICNIC
Today’s Mother’s Day giveaway is technically for your child, but what mom doesn’t love to see their little dressed to the nines? Plus, free clothes for your babe just means more money in the bank (or in your closet).

If you haven’t personally held a piece of Kissy Kissy, take my word for it – it is the softest, best quality baby clothes we have found. These clothes come out of the wash looking brand new. We literally have hand-me-downs from friends, but you would never know it! I am saving all Knox’s Kissy Kissy for my nephew that will make his debut this summer, and I am confident they will come back to me in mint condition for our next one (if we should be so blessed).

The winner will receive two outfits of their choice from the Kissy Kissy Spring 14 Collection.
*Please note, while they do have some items in size 2T and 4T, the bulk of the collection is size preemie to 18-24 months.

HOW TO STYLE WOMEN'S LOAFERS
Living in New York, walking is a way of life. You walk to the grocery store, home from work, to dinner, etc. Despite what it may look like here on HOUSE of HARPER, I don’t walk everywhere in heels. Before I had a stroller, I was a bag lady.  I would keep a change of shoes with me. I am not a fan of the gym so walking also doubles as my exercise. Instead of working out at the end of the day, I justify my laziness by choosing to walk everywhere.  Plus, now that I have little Knox, he prefers to go on a stroll, too.

HOW TO WEAR DRIVING SHOES
That being said, I am always on the hunt for a comfortable pair of flats. Yet it never fails that my new flats usually hurt my feet the worst. Well, I am happy to share that I found my new shoe for spring. These Johnston & Murphy driving shoes are so comfortable and you don’t even have to break them in! I love them so much I got them in two colors – this mint green + HOUSE of HARPER orange, of course.

GREEN J.CREW COCOON COAT
I somehow left my favorite coat in Texas over the summer and I just got it back from my mom. Expect to be seeing a lot more of this coat just in time for spring!

Grace and I met up Monday morning for some girl chat and a walk in Central park.  As I mentioned here, walking is my exercise of choice – especially when I get to enjoy it with a friend!

One of the things I have discovered since moving from Dallas to NYC is that it is so much harder to meet up with your girlfriends. I guess it really is true that New Yorkers are busier because I find myself scheduling girl dates months in advance (after several back and forth emails of trying to find a date).  With Grace’s busy work schedule of running social media at BaubleBar + running her amazing blog,  we decided to combine our girl time with our work out time.  It’s all about multi- tasking!

So on Monday morning, you could find us in my favorite place in the city, Central Park. (Where FMK proposed 5 years ago!)  old navy tennis shoes

If you follow me on Instagram, you already know about this crazy deal. These shoes were $1.97 (in the SoHo store)!  I am still not sure how it is possible.  Or why I only bought one pair.

Speaking of deals. My entire outfit is Old Navy (literally from head to toe) and EVERYTHING cost me less than $60!
