Treating a cough with Vicks VapoRub

The Houston weather can’t decide what season it is this time of year. One day it is a beautiful sunny and 75 and the next day it is rainy and cold. We are flipping back an forth between using our heat and running our A/C and all the up and down to get the boys’ little immune systems under the weather, as well.

Unfortunately, there isn’t really anything you can do to cure the common cold, but you can certainly do a few things to help relieve the cough and make them feel better.  Today I am sharing my ‘mother’s touch’ in partnership with Vicks® VapoRub™.

I think all moms can agree that the only benefit of having a sick little one in the house is the mandatory down time and extra snuggles that come along with it.  When one of the boys get sick it makes me set everything else aside to focus on making them better.  The laundry, the emails and the dishes can wait, it’s time to stay in our pajamas and curl up for some extra snuggles.  Knox, of course, thinks it’s the perfect excuse to watch unlimited cartoons.  For Andrew, it means books in his rocking chair and taking naps on mommy.

Before we snuggle up for a movie or put Knox to sleep at night, I always apply Vicks® VapoRub™ topical ointment on his chest and throat.  Its easy application is perfect for picky toddlers (not having to swallow medicine) and is calming to have their mother’s touch.  Knox loves the smell and requests it at the first sign of a cough.  I love that the medicated vapors last up to 8 hours and provide fast cough relief.

Every time I apply Vicks® VapoRub™ on Knox, I can’t help but think of my own childhood when I smell that familiar scent.  I remember how soothing it was when my mom did the same thing for me so many years ago.  Now, if only I was as good at making her homemade chicken noodle soup…

*Vicks VapoRub is for children 2 years and older.  I do not use this on Andrew, yet. 😉
