I can’t believe it has almost been two years since we made our move from NYC back to Texas. Houston is my husband’s home town and it quickly felt like home to me, as well. We have the Knapp family here and my family is just a few hours north. We have so many friends from college and even FMK’s childhood that made our transition so easy! I even reconnected with my childhood friend, Kate, who is also now my photographer. And our youngest, Drew, was just baptized in the same church that Fred was baptized in. In other words, there are so many personal reasons we love this city, but there is so much more to love that I want to start sharing some of my favorite spots with you! I am going to launch a city guide soon, but in the mean time, here are a few of my favorite things to love about this city (I bet you didn’t know most of them)!
Houston is the 4th largest city in the US (and on track to take Chicago’s #3 spot in the next decade)! Did you know Houston is the most diverse city in the country? Yep, more diverse than New York City. The first rate Medical District and the International Oil and Gas Industry bring people from all over the world to Houston.
Houston is also home to the second largest arts district (second to NYC) with world renowned museums (The #1 Children’s Museum) and theaters. As you can see in the pictures, the city embraces the arts and has super fun color walls and murals. They make for popular back drops for many of the Houston bloggers. Carrie and Lyndsey do a great job capturing them on their blogs and Instagrams. And Ashley just contributed to the city’s colorful wall count by creating the Sugar & Cloth wall! And let’s not forget one of the most iconic, the Biscuit Paint Wall by blogger and designer, Baily!
Houston gets a lot of negative thoughts for the brutal heat, but the truth is it only last a few months in the summer. (And like NYC a lot of people escape the city in the summer, but for Colorado instead of The Hamptons.) But I will take Houston weather from October through May over NYC any day! 😉
And like most Texas towns, you can’t beat the PEOPLE! Houstonians are so friendly and welcoming! Because there are so many people who move to Houston for work it doesn’t have that exclusive ‘this is my town’ feeling that you can get from some southern cities (ahem, Dallas). People here embrace culture and welcome new faces.
With all that diversity comes A LOT of good and authentic food! I was nervous about leaving all our favorite restaurants in the city, but we have found something to replace just about everything from Greek and Vietnamese to a new favorite steak house. Houston obviously has the best Tex-Mex too which I never found in New York. I do have to admit though we haven’t found an Italian restaurant we love as much as our under-rated neighborhood spot, Max’s, in TriBeCa.
