This week on Gilt TV, Mark and I explore some of the fabulous spring shoe trends in today’s Matt Bernson sale – platform wedges, gladiator sandals, blue suede loafers, and more!

The first featured shoe is the Veranda Wedge Sandal in sahara beige. The wooden heel is the perfect compliment to the high waist, 70’s inspired jeans I am wearing.  I also love the Fawn Moccasin in powder blue to play up a work outfit.  And last, but certainly not least, I selected the KM Gladiator Sandal in black for it’s versatility. Grab a pair in metallic, leopard and/or black and you will not regret it!

What is your favorite shoe in today’s sale?

Last Monday I told you what I wore to a Gilt Man shoot in Brooklyn here, but I couldn’t tell you about the actual video.  Well, today I am excited to let you in on the secret.

We were filming at designer Andy Salzer’s Brooklyn home to announce the relaunch of his line, Yoko Devereaux, created exclusively for Gilt Man.

The Yoko Devereaux line was highly coveted by the downtown creatives and Brooklyn hipsters, but after the Williamsburg boutique closed in 2009, it was hard to get your hands on the  dearly departed menswear label.  Wait no more, you can shop Mark and my favorites pieces now through the video or head to Gilt.com to check out the entire sale.

*This exciting news even got the team at racked buzzing about the video!

This week’s video was especially fun for me because it took me back to where I got my start in the fashion industry – Dallas, Texas.

This is the first of a monthly “Inspired By” series where we will focus on cities that have inspired our style at Gilt Groupe.  You know what they say, “Everything is bigger in Texas”, well, it is brighter too!  Dallas women love color and they love to accessorize so we created a sale full of just that.

This week’s video topic came from a Gilt fan via Facebook.  She asked us how she can still look polished while taking caring of her toddler.  Lindsey and I wore two different, but equally chic and practical looks for busy moms to take you from play date to date night.  I hope we answered your question, Sara B!  Keep the suggestions coming, we love hearing your request for future Gilt TV episodes.

Leaving a salaried corporate job to pursue your passion project, freelance, or launch your own business is an intimidating decision, to say the least. It can feel risky, downright terrifying, and even irresponsible to leave the security of a steady paycheck for the unknown. But for many creative, entrepreneurial-minded people – including us – taking the leap from the corporate world to self employment can be the best decision for their career and overall happiness.

This is a common question I get asked on blogger panels and from friends in different fields considering taking the leap.  I thought it would be fun to share my personal story of leaving corporate fashion to pursue HOUSE of HARPER exclusively and then share our tips on what to consider before making the leap yourself.

HOUSE OF HARPER PICTURES IN FRONT OF THE SUGAR AND CLOTH COLOR WALL IN HOUSTON

It’s amazing how the older I get, the faster time seems to fly by.  Maybe it is because all the major milestones I was counting down for (hitting a double-digit age, getting a driver’s license, graduating high school, turning 18, turning 21, you get the idea) were slowing things down and since they’re all behind me now, time flies by at an alarming pace!  (I mean how is it already April?!) I am sitting here trying to figure out how it is possible that I started this blog 5 years ago while FMK and I were vacationing in St. Lucia (more on that below).

If you do anything consistently for five years, the odds are you are going to learn a few things here and there.  Well, needless to say, I have learned so much on this crazy journey we call blogging so I thought it would be fun to share a few of them with you.  For fun, let’s take a look back at how this all got started and I’ll share my Top 5 Things I Have Learned.  Then, I want to thank you for helping me achieve my Top 5 Biggest Accomplishments.  And last, I want to share the Top 5 Post from each year.  Sound fun?  Let’s do this!

{sweater (sold out, but this one is cute too) & shirt: J. Crew, jeans: Gap; shoes: Schutz, handbag: Zara; sunglasses & ring: David Yurman; necklace: Banana Republic; watch: Michelle; bracelets: David Yurman & Ettika }

This sweater is right on trend for the ‘sequins for day’ look that is so hot this fall.  Since the chunky fit of the sweater feels casual already, I pulled up my hair and added leopard heels and a matching statement necklace to spice things up.  (I have tried not to say “spice up” anymore after hearing myself on Gilt TV.  In my first video, I used up my lifetime supply! Cringe.  But, the pretty cinnamon color in the sweater makes it seem appropriate in this post.)

This sweater is meant for a casual day outfit, but I listed some easy styling tips below to make a dressier piece suitable for brunch or the office.  (See here where I used some of the tips below on a sequin skirt.)

Styling Tips:
1. Wear flats to give a more casual vibe
2. Pair with baggy fitting trousers so you don’t look like you are tying too hard.
3. Style with stripes or plaid to add a playful twist
4. Add denim to the mix with a jacket, shirt or jeans
5. Top off the look with a casual hat

{Coat: Gryphon, Shirt: Club Monaco, Jeans: Seven, Shoes: Ann Taylor Loft, Bag: gifted Michael Kors, Scarf: street vendor, watch: Michelle, Bracelets: Express, Ring: David Yurman}

First of all, I want to apologize for the sparse postings the past few weeks.  I got an exciting promotion at work that has left me with less time for blogging.  But, once I get the hang of things, I will be back on track here!

These pictures were taken last weekend when I was running my usual Saturday morning errands.  I thought it would be fun to take you along with me in the spirit of getting to know each other.  Plus, it has been a while since I posted a casual weekend outfit, and I thought it was time to show you what I wear around town.

The weather has been absolutely beautiful in New York.  Spring has finally sprung, and I am finding every excuse to be outside (hence the park bench pic)!  I love this time of year because I can throw on a light weight coat or scarf and be set.  Plus, the additional layers add more dimension to the outfit and give you another excuse to accessorize (as if you needed one).

I have been lusting over the khaki trench since filming this Gilt TV episode, and I finally made the purchase a few weeks ago.  If you don’t have a trench coat, I highly suggest investing in this timeless staple.   It is the perfect layering piece that you will be able to wear forever.  I don’t think I have gone a day without mine since I bought it – LOVING it!

What’s your favorite weekend wear?

As many of you know, I’ve been running House of Harper solo since the beginning when I was juggling a full-time job as a buyer at Gilt Groupe while working on HoH after hours. SO much has changed since then — having Knox, packing up our NYC life and moving cross country, and then having Andrew are just a few of the milestones! Leaving my job to pursue HoH full-time, buying our first house, growing our family, and settling into a new life in Texas are other significant life changes that you have all shared with us and always supported me along the way.

Today is the first day the Nordstrom anniversary sale is open to the public (non cardholders)!  Every year the Nordstrom anniversary sale comes around and we all swarm to stock up on our fall favorites and back to school must-haves.  It isn’t often you get a chance to shop NEW merchandise at a discount and it would be an understatement to say we all swarm to the occasion.  But this year, it wasn’t just the fall trends that had me scrambling to add to cart, it was the beauty buys!  Beauty products don’t typically go on sale, because they rarely go out of stock.  They are a replenishment item that is always on the shelf and therefore retails don’t need to mark it down to make room for the new stuff.  For that reason, this is a huge opportunity to save on beauty.  And the items they marked down this year are better than I can ever remember.  Like I am talking so many of my must have, go-to products are on the list!  To shop my favorite fashion styles, look over here because today we are talking all things beauty!

You guys, I have something that I am so excited to tell you about!  But first, let’s rewind to last month when I was honored to be among one of David Peck’s celebrity models at the Know Autism Gala.  It was such an amazing opportunity for me to get involved in a local cause and to meet so many charitable Houstonians. Donae Cangelosi Chramosta, a.k.a The Vintage Contessa, was among those women.  Her jaw dropping emerald jewelry was an obvious conversation starter and when she started telling me how she sources and sells vintage, luxury jewelry and handbags, I knew I wanted to hear more!

When Donae invited me to stop by her office, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I can promise you – I DID NOT expect THIS!  Can you imagine coming to ‘work’ everyday surrounded by shelves of Chanel, Hermes and Louis Vuitton?!  Keep in mind, I have worked at Neiman Marcus and Gilt Groupe so being surrounded by pretty things isn’t completely foreign to me, but seeing all these rare, vintage pieces in one place – imagining where they had been and from who’s arm they had hung – was a whole new level of fun!  When Kate and I walked out the door, I literally looked at her and had to ask, “Did that just happen?!”

A little more about The Vintage Contessa:
The Vintage Contessa is a vintage boutique based in Houston, Texas, (but, don’t worry!) with a website that ships globally to vintage aficionados around the world.  Each and every item available has been purchased personally by Donae and her husband, Rob.  As a self-proclaimed shopaholic, fashionista and lover of all things vintage, the website and store were dreams of Donae’s. She cleverly combined her whimsical soul and passion for fashion with Rob’s twenty years of experience in the vintage luxury market. Together the Chramosta’s have a globally trusted reputation.  You can read more about their authenticity guarantee here.

I am going to be partnering with TVC throughout the year by featuring accessories she has in stock through my outfit post & Instagram.  Of course, all items will be available for purchase through TVC.

Hi!  I am writing from home in Texas where we are spending the holidays with family and friends.

I thought this relaxing, post holiday Monday would be a perfect day to share some photos of our cozy, little apartment in New York.  I cleaned and organized everything before leaving for Texas so we can return home ready to jump into a new year.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand to leave a messy home behind.

To see more apartment pictures and to read about my decorating style, you can check out my older post here, here & here.

Happy holidays and new year to you all!

xoxo,

{Dress: Dolce and Gabbana, Shoes: dolce vita, bracelets: Amrita Singh via Gilt Groupe}

This dress holds a special place in my heart because it was one of my first Designer purchases.  By that, I mean this is a sample that I bought at an employee sample sale when I was an Assistant Buyer at Neiman Marcus, but it still counts.  Right?

Being a true lover of fashion, I do believe that great clothes are a work of art, and this dress takes it to a whole new level with the brush stroke print.  So, where do you take pictures of a dress like this?  In front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, of course!

If you will remember from this video, I love dresses for their simplicity.  Let’s face it, some mornings, I am lucky to get out the door on time.  Period.  But, when you work in fashion, you feel a certain pressure to always be stylish.  So, how do you still look put together and still get out the door in 30 minutes?  A dress.

For this dress, I kept the shoes a simple shade of gray to anchor the outfit.  The silver and rhinestone bangles add a nice touch, and I am out the door!

Styling Tip: To take this dress into the evening, I add a statement necklace and pull back my hair to dress it up.

How do you stay chic at work?
