Happy weekend! We are continuing our home tour this week with our living room. This room (and the kitchen) have changed the most since we first bought our home three years ago. I love how all the changes we made along the way really modernized and opened up our home to make the best use out of the space. Opening up the walls has creating a brighter space that makes our modest home feel bigger.

When we purchased our home, the current dining room was completely closed off to the living area (and used as a formal living room) and there was another separate sun room (where the navy chase lounge is today). In our renovations, we opened the wall between the dining room and living room and combined the living room and sunroom for one big, open floor plan. Our house is ~2,500. When we moved from New York City this sounded huge, but after adding two kids and a dog, anything to make it feel bigger is a good thing. 😉
We have also made a lot of cosmetic changes in this space in addition to changing the layout. The fireplace was originally red brick with cabinets to the left and an entrance to the kitchen to the right. (You may remember this project when I shared it here.) Since we added built-ins to create a more symmetrical look on both sides of the fireplace, we also decided to remove some built-in shelves on the back wall of the room that looked dated and were just challenging to style around. In the process, we also took down the paneling on the walls in the living room and refinished the original hardwood floors.

I partnered with Jawda & Jawda on the interior design elements of this space. I wanted our home to feel warm, but I also wanted it to be a place I was proud to entertain friends. But most importantly, at the end of the day, it needed to be a place we all loved coming home to and would feel comfortable truly living in. The sofa and coffee table you may recognize from our NYC apartment, but we had to gradually collect the rest of the furniture since this house is obviously much bigger than our apartment was. The chairs have both been recovered from their original form – I love how a new coat of paint or quality fabric can completely transform a good piece of furniture that may just need a little love. The antique sconces on the back wall use to hang in my grandparent’s dining room so they are one of my favorite details in the room.

I love what’s you done to update your Houston home.
I too live in Houston and about to start a remodel ( repair ) from Harvey. My problem is choosing a paint color for the downstairs of my home. I’ve bought almost 20 colors and not in love! Can you share the paint color you have in your family room???

Thank you! Our living area is Balboa Mist by Benjamin Moore. Revere Pewter is another popular color, but a little darker and warmer. Good luck with everything!

I have always had two sofas and one set of matching chairs. We are about to re-do our living room when we move and now I am thinking, after looking at your room, why not try one sofa and two sets of chairs…love the sofa and how soft and relaxed it looks. Pottery Barn? I don’t like the oversized sofas – they take over the room. This looks in scale. Nice job.
